Motoko Kotani is Director of the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR) and a distinguished Professor in Tohoku University’s Mathematical Institute. She is a mathematician who specializes in geometry, and was awarded the 25th Saruhashi Award in 2005 for her work in discrete geometric analysis on crystal lattices. She has led a CREST (JST) research team since 2008 and is a Japanese leader for mathematics-materials science collaboration. She also contributes to the Japanese science and technology community as a committee member of the Council of Science and Technology Policy (CSTP), an associate member of the Science Council of Japan (Committee on Mathematical Sciences), and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mathematical Society of Japan.
